One of the most common concerns we hear from homeowners before starting a bathroom remodel: "I have no idea what's going to happen or how long it's going to take." That anxiety is completely understandable. You're about to lose access to one of the most essential rooms in your home.
Here's the honest week-by-week breakdown of a typical full bathroom remodel, which usually runs 4–6 weeks for a standard bathroom.
Week 1: Demolition and rough-in begins. This is the loudest, dustiest week. Everything comes out — tile, vanity, toilet, tub or shower pan, drywall or cement board behind the tile. Once the walls are open, your plumber and electrician do any rough-in work: moving the shower drain, adding a GFCI circuit, relocating the vent fan. This phase often reveals surprises — old plumbing that needs upgrading, a rotted subfloor, or a joist that's in the wrong place. These issues get addressed now, before walls close up.
Week 2: Waterproofing and backer installation. New cement board or membrane waterproofing goes up on the shower walls. The subfloor gets leveled if needed. Any structural issues get resolved. Your project manager should walk you through what was found and get your approval on any change orders before proceeding.
Week 3: Tile work begins. The shower floor and walls are tiled, often taking the full week for a custom design with natural stone or large-format tile. Bathroom floor tile also goes down. This is the phase where you start to see the vision come together — and where tile selection decisions made months ago suddenly feel very real.
Week 4: Vanity, fixtures, and trim. The vanity goes in, the toilet is set, shower fixtures are installed, mirrors and medicine cabinets are hung. Painting happens this week. The room starts to look like a bathroom again.
Week 5 (if needed): Punch list and detail work. Touch-up painting, caulking around the tub and vanity, hardware installation, glass door installation if applicable. Final inspections if permits were pulled.
The key to a smooth bathroom remodel: make all your selections — tile, vanity, fixtures, hardware — before demo day. Material delays are the number one cause of extended timelines.
